Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Strategy 1

Small group tier 3 instruction that targets a specific literacy skill (e.g. phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary)

Strategy 2

Leverage Tier 1 LA Core instruction by utilizing the planning and pacing guide along with the VDOE skills progression

chart and small group instruction

Strategy 3

Tier 2 support: purchase programs to support students during Bear Block and provide necessary training

Strategy 4

Literacy Leaders and teachers will plan and host a family engagement event where families learn literacy strategies to support

students when working at home.

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Strategy 1

Small group tier 3 instruction that targets a specific mathematical skill (e.g. number sense, algebraic concepts)

Strategy 2

Leverage Tier 1 math core instruction by utilizing the planning and pacing guide along with the VDOE skills progression

chart and small group instruction

Strategy 3

Tier 2 support: purchase programs/materials to support students during Bear Block

Strategy 4

Math Leaders and teachers will plan and host a family engagement event where families learn math strategies to support

students when working at home.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Strategy 1

Use Tier 1 level interventions to introduce RULER (specifically mood meter, meta-moment, and classroom contract) to all students

Strategy 2

In coordination with our Special Education Team, specifically, Cat B staff, purchase sensory equipment designed to create calm, safe spaces for students with disabilities and to assist with their emotion regulation.

Strategy 3

Provide tier 2 level support to students who need additional instruction in recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing or regulating emotions.
