The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

English Language Arts 

Outcome:

Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Goal:

90% of students in Kindergarten will meet grade level expectations on PALS-K by Spring 2023. 85% of students in grades 1-6 will meet their target growth on iReady.

Strategy 1:

Students will engage in daily, systematic, explicit instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and morphology in the core language arts block.

Strategy 2:

Students will have increased time dedicated to foundational skills instruction and practice in the core language

arts block.

Strategy 3:

Students will receive targeted practice opportunities using evidence based instructional practices aligned with the science of reading. Additional time for those who need more practice will be provided with small group instruction.

Mathematics 

Outcome:

Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Goal:

100% of students in grades K-6 will improve by at least one rubric step for mathematical communication on the student mathematics profile by Spring 2023.

Strategy 1:

Students will move from a show-and-tell model to a share-and-compare model (Shift 4). Teachers will identify strategies to enhance student's voice and draw comparisons between their work and classmates' understanding.

Strategy 2:

Students will engage in at least one rich math task per quarter that focuses on mathematical computation. Teachers will plan and reflect on these tasks during weekly CLT.

Wellness 

Outcome:

Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Goal: 

By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, Union Mill will utilize Morning Meeting, Closing Circle, Intervention Block, and RULER to empower students to manage their emotions, thoughts and behaviors more effectively, increasing schoolwide scores on the self-management topic of the SEL Screener by 7% from 43 to 50 percent favorable for grades 3-6.

Strategy 1:

Provide targeted support or intensive interventions for students to support needs at tier 2/3

Strategy 2:

Classroom teachers will successfully implement social/emotional learning during morning meeting, closing circle, and intervention block to support self-management skills

Strategy 3:

Creating a home-school partnership focusing on all stakeholders supporting students' self-management skills

Portrait of a Graduate (POG)

Outcome:

All students will complete a POG Presentation of Learning (POL) by 2025-26. 

Goal:

100% of students will demonstrate an increased understanding of POG and an increase in student engagement as reported on a student survey given at the beginning and end of the year.

Strategy 1:

The school will build an understanding with students, staff, and the community about why POG attributes and skills positively impact students within and beyond school.

Strategy 2:

Teachers will design and facilitate inquiry-based opportunities that elevate student voice and increase student engagement.
